1.Scope
1.1Thesetestmethodscoverthedeterminationofresonances
ofunpackagedproductsandcomponentsofunpackaged
productsbymeansofverticallinearmotionatthesurfaceon
whichtheproductismountedfortest.Twoalternatetest
methodsarepresented:
TestMethodA—ResonanceSearchUsingSinusoidalVibration,and
TestMethodB—ResonanceSearchUsingRandomVibration.
NOTE1—Thetwotestmethodsarenotnecessarilyequivalentandmay
notproducethesameresults.Itispossiblethattestsusingrandom
vibrationmaybemorerepresentativeofthetransportenvironmentand
maybeconductedmorequicklythansinetests.
1.2Thisinformationmaybeusedtoexaminetheresponse
ofproductstovibrationforproductdesignpurposes,orforthe
designofacontainerorinteriorpackagethatwillminimize
transportationvibrationinputsatthesecriticalfrequencies,
whentheseproductsresonancesarewithintheexpected
transportationenvironmentfrequencyrange.Sincevibration
damageismostlikelytooccuratproductresonantfrequencies,
theseresonancesmaybethoughtofaspotentialproduct
fragilitypoints.
1.3Informationobtainedfromtheoptionaldwelltestmethods
maybeusedtoassessthefatiguecharacteristicsofthe
resonatingcomponentsandforproductmodification.Thismay
becomenecessaryiftheresponseofaproductwouldrequire
designofanimpracticalorexcessivelycostlyshippingcontainer.
1.4Thesetestmethodsdonotnecessarilysimulatethe
vibrationeffectsthattheproductwillencounterinitsoperational
orin-useenvironment.Other,moresuitabletestprocedures
shouldbeusedforthispurpose.
1.5Testlevelsgiveninthesetestmethodsrepresentthe
correlationofthebestinformationcurrentlyavailablefrom
researchinvestigationandfromexperienceintheuseofthese
testmethods.Ifmoreapplicableoraccuratedataareavailable,
theyshouldbesubstituted.
1.6Thisstandarddoesnotpurporttoaddressallofthe
safetyconcerns,ifany,associatedwithitsuse.Itistheresponsibilityoftheuserofthisstandardtoestablishappropriate
safetyandhealthpracticesanddeterminetheapplicability
ofregulatorylimitationspriortouse.SeeSection6for
specificprecautionarystatements.
